Meditation: “When Scripture treats justification by
faith, it turns away our view from our own works, and bids us look only to the
mercy of God and the perfection of Christ. The order of justification it sets before
us is this. That God of mere gratuitous goodness is pleased to embrace the
sinner, in whom he sees nothing that can move him to mercy but wretchedness
because he is altogether naked and destitute of good works. He, therefore,
seeks the cause of kindness in himself, that thus he may affect the sinner by a
sense of his goodness, and induce him, in distrust of his own works, to cast
himself entirely upon his mercy for salvation. This is the meaning of faith by
which the sinner comes into the possession of salvation” (John Calvin).
The Reformed Witness Hour message, “Turned From The Truth” – 2 Timothy
4:3-5a
will be heard today at
8am on WFUR 102.9 FM and at 4pm on WFUR 1570 AM.
CONGREGATIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
~The
sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be administered this morning. Since partaking
of the bread and wine is a testimony of spiritual maturity, doctrinal unity,
and can be taken unworthily to one’s own judgment, we practice close communion,
i.e. participation is closely supervised by the consistory and limited to
members of the congregation in good standing and visitors who received prior
permission from the consistory. The
Thank Offering is for Benevolence.
~The Council and Consistory
meeting will be held on Thursday,
August 21 at 7:00 pm.
~Mrs.
Jane Petersen had a
