This Week's PRC and Sister-Church News, November 17-23, 2019

Psalms 103 8On this forty-sixth Lord's Day of 2019, November 17, the following news and information concerning PRC congregations, the Seminary, sister churches, and mission fields may be reported.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

There is no true or solid peace to be enjoyed in the world except in the way of reposing upon the promises of God. Those who do not resort to them may succeed for a time in hushing or evading the terrors of conscience, but they must ever be strangers to true inward comfort. And, granting that they may attain to the peace of insensibility, this is not a state which could satisfy any man who has seriously felt the fear of the Lord. The joy which we desire is that which flows from hearing the word of God, in which he promises to pardon our guilt and readmit us into his favor. It is this alone which supports the believer amidst all the fears, dangers, and distresses of his earthly pilgrimage; for the joy of the Spirit is inseparable from faith. ~ John Calvin

PRC Seminary News:

  • The seminary is now entering its thirteenth week of the first semester in the school year, and faculty, students, and staff remain busy with their various tasks. Tomorrow the second round of practice preaching will be held (Nov.18), with Sems. J. Tan and M. Wee delivering their second sermons of the semester. Next week the seminary will take its two-day Thanksgiving break (Nov.28-29). Continue to include the seminary in your regular prayers.

  • The schedule for the first semester has been posted on the seminary's website. If you are interested in visiting, please contact the seminary secretary (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

  • The faculty announces that Sem. Josiah Tan (CERC-Singapore) has been licensed to speak a word of edification in the churches. We rejoice with the brother in this important milestone in his preparation for the ministry. Contact the rector, Prof. B. Gritters, for scheduling.
  • The Fall 2019 issue of the PRT Journal is being put together and should be available in late November. Watch for articles based on presentations given in Mexico this past summer and plenty of profitable book reviews.

  • Looking for some good Reformed books to read, Bible study materials or seminary publications to use, or perhaps some gifts for the holiday season? Come and visit the seminary's bookstore! We have a variety of Bibles, commentaries, and good books - used and new (including Reformation titles!) - for our members and friends. And you may also make use of our library - here's the link to our online catalog if you wish to search for something to read or use.

  • Remember the Seminary's Dordt400 Conference in April of this year? The speeches and presentations given at this event have now been compiled, expanded, and edited (by Prof. R. Cammenga) and form the newly published RFPA book, For God's Glory and the Church's Consolation: 400 Years of the Synod of Dordt. Visit the website to order your copy, or come to the seminary bookstore to find one!

  • Need for Ministers: Synod 2019 took a decision to place the urgent need for seminary students before our churches. Please remember in your prayers to petition the Lord of the harvest for pastors, and please encourage young men, whom you observe to have the gifts, to consider the ministry. If you wish to listen to a couple of sermons by our professors that address this need, listen to "The (Suffering) Minister's Steadfast Confession" and "The Beautiful Feet of the Gospel Preacher."

SISTER-CHURCH NEWS:

  • Concerning our sister church in Singapore, Covenant ERC, we may note the following:
    • Rev. A. denHartog and his wife continue to serve the CERC while she is vacant.
    • *We rejoice with our sister as she celebrates her 32nd anniversary today: "Today we celebrate CERC 32nd Anniversary. We come together to give thanks to God for keeping Covenant these 32 years. We can indeed say “Great is Thy Faithfulness”. In these 32 years, Covenant went through many trials in her journey and yet the Lord in His graciousness kept us till this day. As we give thanks for His goodness to us in the past, we also continue to pray for grace as we move ahead. The road ahead of us as indicated in the word of God, will not be easy for the church of our Lord Jesus Christ. There will be more trying times ahead. Le us continue to pray for one another and help one another to remain faithful in the calling which Christ has called us to do. May we also encourage one another with this word “The LORD is my portion; therefore will I hope in Him”. [from her bulletin today]
    • Concerning Rev. J. Mahtani's acceptance of the call to serve them: "We are now making preparation to receive Rev J. Mahtani and his family to come to Singapore to serve as MOL in CERC. They will probably arrive in Singapore in early January 2020." (See the note above from Grandville PRC's bulletin under "congregational news" for more details)

  • Concerning the PRC in the Philippines, we may note the following from the bulletins of the Berean PRC, PRC in Bulacan, Maranatha PRC, and Provident CC:
    • Berean PRC: Rev. V. Ibe led the worship services today. "Our brothers and sisters in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija will join us in our worship services today via phone patch. We pray for God’s continued blessings as they hear and receive the proclamation of His Word!"
