RESOLVING CONFLICTS IN MARRIAGE
By Rev Wilbur Bruinsma

"Conflict in marriage is inevitable.  It is so because in marriage two sinners are bound together by God.  None of us is free of sin.  And sin is what gives rise to conflict in marriage.  There are disagreements that arise between a husband and a wife.  In fact, it is a wonder that God, almost miraculously, takes two incompatible sinners and makes them one flesh, and then, by His grace, causes them to live together in that peace and that joy which is necessary for marriage."

In a two-part series aired over the Reformed Witness Hour radio broadcast, Rev Bruinsma talks about one of the main causes of conflict in marriage - pride - as well as practices that should be found in every marriage: giving, communication, reading the Word of God together and repentance.

Less Than The Least
by Cornelius Hanko

From the RFPA website:

"Son of Dutch immigrants to America, Rev. Hanko served six pastorates in five states, most notably in First Protestant Reformed Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan (1948–1964), along with Rev. Herman Hoeksema and Rev. Hubert De Wolf. Rev. Hanko poignantly describes the grief caused in the PRC by De Wolf’s heresy and schism (1953).

More than this, Less Than the Least follows Rev. Hanko from his childhood, school days, and seminary training, all the way to his retirement (1977) and beyond.

This delightful book comes complete with photos and appendices."

CERC Church Camp (12-15 Jun)
June's always an exciting month for CERC, with school holidays for the children and many church activities. It's also the time of the year for our annual church camp, one of the highlights of our organic church life.

This year, we returned to one of our favourite camp locations - Awana Genting! Situated up in the mountains of Malaysia, the cooler environment was a respite from the sweltering heat of Singapore. It was also a relief for the 7 Americans that had joined us from PRCA (see if you can spot them!). Given its location, the camp theme - Zion founded on the mountains - was an apt one, and the related speeches and discussions were nourishing for our souls.
GROUP PHOTO! We had quite a turnout this camp, with just over 110 campers.

Brave souls preparing to embark on an exhilarating, physically-challenging, leech-infested, FUN hike.

CK/CKS June Retreat (24-26 Jun)
Another highlight in June (for the young people) is the Covenant Keepers' retreat. Held at Changi Cottage over 3 days, it was a nice way for the youths to spend time together in fellowship and studying God's word. The theme this year was "The God of Zion's Youth".

In a game of Mental Sums, Rachel Buiter (who happens to be going to school for Math), loses to her brother Brian and gets splashed in the face.
The unconventional game of crab soccer. The game eventually ended when the ball got punctured by thorns. How deflating.
Rev Lanning was unable to speak for us in person as he was attending the PRCA Synod. So we watched recorded speeches that he had prepared and sent us instead.

7 Young Americans!
More (young) visitors to add to the list! This past month, we welcomed and hosted 7 young Americans from the PRCA: From Hope (Redlands): Brian and Rachel Buiter, Bruce and Emily Feenstra; from Crete: Lydia Smits and Cobie Lenting; from Hope (Walker): Monica Koole.

We had a whale of a time taking them around Singapore, letting them try our foods (including the un-disputably delicious Durian), fellowshipping in church and at the camp/retreat, and simply getting to know one another.

Farewell Sunday - as usual, our visitors were given a very warm farewell.  During the entertainment segment, they were made to answer questions about Singapore and CERC. For each wrong answer, they all had the privilege of savouring a local dish (:

GOD’S FOREKNOWLEDGE & MAN’S FREE WILL
By Prof Herman Hanko

Do we truly know what the Bible teaches regarding God's foreknowledge, especially with regard to our wills and salvation? Time and again, the truth concerning this has been attacked in order to make room for man's role in salvation.

Gospel Truth of Justification
by Prof David Engelsma

From the RFPA website:

"AD 2017 marks the five-hundredth anniversary of the Reformation of the church of Jesus Christ. In 1517 the Reformer Martin Luther affixed the ninety-five theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany, the act by which Jesus Christ began his reformation of his church. Essential to this Reformation was the gospel-truth of justification by faith alone. This book on justification is intended by the Reformed Free Publishing Association and the author to celebrate that glorious work of Christ.

But the purpose is more than a celebration of the beginning of the Reformation. It is to maintain, defend, and promote the Reformation in the perilous times for the church at present. The doctrine of justification by faith alone is so fundamental to the gospel of grace that an exposition and defense of this truth are in order always. The true church of Christ in the world simply cannot keep silent about this doctrine. To keep silent about justification by faith alone would be to silence the gospel."

CERC Sports Day
This year, our sports day had a change of pace. Instead of starting off the morning of a public holiday with real sports, we met in the late afternoon instead for a walk around Labrador Park. We concluded the evening with devotions and a sumptuous dinner.

CK vs CKS Inaugural Sports Championship
For our CKCKS outing in May, a group of youths gathered in church to make gifts for the parents of the church to show our appreciation to them. Not our typical outing, but it gave the youths a nice opportunity to just sit and chat.
We split into two groups - the "cutters" and the "stickers"
Finished product - a pair of frames with a poem for mum and another for dad

Spiritual Growth
By Rev Carl Haak

"Are you growing spiritually?  Are you growing in the use of your tongue?  Are you growing in resisting besetting sins?  Are you growing in hope and patience and trust in God?  Are you growing in love for God and for His people?  Are you growing in new and holy desires?  Or are you remaining a child?  Are you remaining fickle, gullible?  Or are you maturing spiritually?  If you are not growing, why not?  Are you allowing the impediments of sin to restrict that growth?  Are you living in bitterness or anger?  Do you live in a lust for the world?  Or is it due simply to negligence — you do not give yourself to spiritual things?"

Penetrating questions. The Christian life is not static. Where there is life, there must be growth! Read to find out more of the growth of a Christian who has been given a new life in Christ Jesus!

Corrupting the Word of God
by Herman Hanko & Mark H. Hoeksema

From the RFPA website:

"Does the eternal, unchangeable, all-powerful, and sovereign God really have a temporal, changeable and weak desire to save those whom he has unconditionally reprobated (Rom. 9:22), for whom the Son did not die (John 12:31) and whom the Holy Spirit will not regenerate, sanctify or glorify (John 3:8)?

Pelagianism, semi-Pelagianism, Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism, Anabaptism, Arminianism, Amyraldism, and Marrowism say yes to the well-meant offer of the gospel. The biblical, Augustinian, Reformed, and creedal position is no!

Emeritus professor of church history, Herman Hanko, guides us through fascinating doctrinal controversies in the early, Reformation and modern eras of the church, taking us to North Africa, Switzerland, France, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, and America, and emphasizing the teaching of the great theologians, such as Augustine and John Calvin, on God’s particular grace, which is always irresistible and never fails or is frustrated.

In dealing with the historical perspective of God's absolutely sovereign grace versus the well-meant offer, this book fills a gap in the literature, and does so in a way that is warm and easily understood."

Infant Baptism of Isaiah Chua
Early this April, CERC rejoiced with Lee Yang and Joanna as we witnesed the Infant Baptism of Isaiah. Praying the Lord's blessings upon them as they bring up this covenant child in the fear of His name.

CK vs CKS Inaugural Sports Championship
For our CKCKS outing in April, we had our first ever CK (13-16 years old) vs CKS (17 years old and up) sports face-off! After singing and exhortation, we commenced with the all-time fav, Captain's ball! It was a close match but CKS emergered victors with a one point lead. After a short break, we resumed with Ultimate Frisbee. CK started off sluggishly, only picking up speed only towards the end of the game but it was too late! And so the 2017 championship title goes to CKS! Till next year!
Exhausted but happy young people

After Rev and Mrs Stewart, Dr Julian and Mariana Kennedy are the second set of visitors from our sister church in Northern Ireland. The church members enjoyed spending some time getting to know them.
