Sovereignly Elected

Removing one letter from a word can change its meaning radically. Take the first letter off the word "bless" and you get the word "less." Take the first letter off the word "selection" and you get "election." The point is that we must maintain sovereign election of our God and never call it selection. The almighty and all-wise God did not select but elect.

To select means to choose because of certain characteristics that are found in a thing or person. When God elected the members of the body of Christ, His church, He did not choose them because of what was in them or had been done by them. He elected them unto what He would do in them as well as for them.

This we should bear in mind when we read passages such as II Peter 1:10 . There we read, "Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall." Peter, and our God through him, is not speaking of our filling certain conditions so that God will choose us. He chose us eternally, and that means before we came into being, and before we performed any works. In Ephesians 1:4 Paul wrote that we were chosen before the foundation of the world. Thus we were chosen, not because of what we did or would do, but chosen unto doing works of faith.

Here we have an awesome truth, but also a very comforting truth, and one which we must defend and maintain in the midst of a world that makes God dependent upon man's will and man's deeds. He invites us, and it all now depends on what we do or do not do.

No, let us believe and confess that our God decides who His people will be and are; and we do not stop Him or help Him. He is God. Let us praise and thank Him for our salvation as a free gift. We need to be saved from thinking that God depends upon us and our will.
