An Extra Day with Extra Care

Psalm 74:16 17

Every fourth year the whole world becomes aware of what the psalmist wrote in Psalm 74:16-17. There Asaph wrote, "The day is Thine, the night also is Thine: Thou hast prepared the light and the sun.  Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: Thou hast made summer and winter.''

No, every man on earth does not on February 29 confess that leap year is the work of God's hands, and that He controls the days and the nights, by means of the sun and its light, so that we have an extra day in the second month of some years. But no man can deny that there is a difference here, over which man has no control, and that man must abide by what it pleases God to do.

But the child of God sings:

    The day is Thine, and Thine the night,
    And Thine the shining sun;
    At Thy command earth's bounds are set,
    And changing seasons run. (PRC Psalter)

And to that truth we must hold.

The thought of the psalmist behind all this is that the church must have no fear of her enemies. God has not lost control, when His church is ridiculed, mocked, and persecuted. Things have not slipped out of God's hands, when a child of God is desperately ill and dies, in what we call the prime of his life. Everything happens exactly on time. The sun rises at the exact moment because God controls it; arid the moon is full or new the exact minute of every month and year. What amazing control!

When this day is added to our year, stop to appreciate the fact that Asaph writes in verse 12, "For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth."  There you have it! God is working salvation in the earth as King over all creation, including Satan and his wicked host.

The time will never be too short for us to get salvation. The days will never be too long, so that we slip away from Christ and the work He accomplished on His cross.

An extra day speaks of extra care that God has for His church. There is no confusion in God's works but perfect order, so that presently we will be brought into heavenly perfection.
