Singing a New Song

Saturday the 21st of July

in Meditations II

Things do wear out and are discarded. Some things do so more slowly than other objects, but we are accustomed to this wearing out, and then go after new items which we desire to have.

By all means, however, bear in mind what the psalmist wrote in Psalm 98:1 . There we read, "O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory." According to this verse it is so important that as believers we do sing of the marvelous things God has wrought for us.

Man likes to sing when he is healthy, and when things go his way. The world delights in music and songs, and sponsors its programs of singing. But we sing a new song, not the old ones the world sings, not the songs rooted in unbelief and love of sin. Our new song must be one of praise to God. It must be about the wonderful salvation which He is working through Christ, and about His very, very important cross which realized salvation for us.That is the marvelous work which God has wrought for us! It is a new song because we fell into sin, and began to sing about worldliness and our carnal pleasures. As a frail, sinful people who have such a wonderful salvation, we have a new song to sing.

God realized an everlasting, most blessed victory for us. He told Satan that he would experience the enmity of the members of His church, and that, in Christ, the head of Satan and his seed would be crushed, assuring us of all the blessedness of a full and free salvation.

Sing then God's praises. Sing of His wonderful grace. Sing of the salvation which is begun in you and is sure to come more fully when Christ returns. Stop your ears when the world sings.

Sing a new song to Jehovah,
For the wonders He has wrought;
His right hand and arm most holy
Triumph to His cause have brought.
In His love and tender mercy
He has made salvation known.
In the sight of ev'ry nation
He His righteousness hath shown. (Psalter 261:1)
