The Church, God's Workmanship

A very important truth is given us in Ephesians 2:8, 9 . There Paul, as used by God, tells us that we are saved by grace through faith, which we have not manufactured ourselves but have received as a gift from God. And faith is a manifestation of the fact that God has begun salvation in us.

To understand this truth Jesus said in verse 10, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." And here are especially three things to which we should hold on and believe.

We are God's workmanship. We are this workmanship by an act of being created in Christ Jesus. This makes us able to walk in good works. In other words, our salvation is what God realized and not by our act of believing. That it is an act of creating that makes us believers declares powerfully that we did not exist as children of God until He brought us into being as believers. Further it is God Who made us to be believers. Before the world was created God ordained us to become believers in Christ. In fact, the Greek word here for ordained means "made ready before." We were made capable of believing before there was any act on our part that pleased God. We were sinners and unbelievers; but He made us to be believers in His eternal plan or counsel.

The church of Christ is God's workmanship in the absolute sense of the word. And we owe God thanks for what He did by making us believers.

Salvation ¾ every part of it ¾ is God's gift to us, not that which we received because of what we did. He must get all the credit for it. And we just cannot give Him enough thanks for that salvation.

Quote for Reflection:

Jesus’ Ascension: “Our Lord is doing the best thing for His Kingdom in going away. It was in the highest degree expedient that He should go, and that we should each one receive the Spirit. There is a blessed unity between Christ the King and the commonest soldier in the ranks. He has not taken His heart from us, nor His care from us, nor His interest from us: He is bound up heart and soul with His people, and their holy warfare, and this is the evidence of it, "Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."  (Rev. 22:12)  -C. Spurgeon
