PRC and Sister-Church News Highlights for February 19, 2023 *(Updated)

Contents[Show]

Psalm 88 2Today, February 19, is the eighth Lord's Day of this year of our Lord 2023. Below you will find special highlights of PRC and sister-church news. It is our hope that these reports not only inform you but also give you opportunity to pray for the needs of these churches and mission fields throughout the world.

As we continue our pilgrim journey in this new year, we do so in glad and grateful worship of our sovereign, saving God and King. Through Jesus Christ His Son and by His Holy Spirit our heavenly Father has redeemed and renewed us to be His worshiping and serving people. To Him we owe our all, and to Him we strive to give our all! Soli Deo gloria!

If you are new to this website and the PRCA, we invite you to join us in worship today or on any of the Sunday's of this year at one of our local congregations near you, or listen online.

O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee: Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry; For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. ...Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah. Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee. Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah. ~ Psalm 88:1-3, 6, 7, 9, 10

  • Congregational Activities/Evangelism/Missions:
    • Hope PRC-Grand Rapids, MI: "The Myanmar Committee reported that it held a video conference with Rev. Titus, Elder Naw Taung, and Deacon Joseph. Although the saints in Myanmar are sustained by God’s grace, crime is on the rise due to civil war and the absence of police. A thief broke into Rev. Titus’ home and stole his cellphone and all of his money. ...In other news, Rev. Titus reported that the American Embassy is limiting visas and has temporarily closed its online booking. This means that the visit of Rev. Titus and his family will have to be delayed. The Council remains hopeful that a two-week visit will be possible later this year and will continue to plan accordingly. We wait on the will of the Lord. “A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps” (Proverbs 16:9)."
    • Zion PRC: "Community Bible Study will meet next Wednesday at 7 pm to begin working through John 11 [in the youth building on SW side of church]. Please consider inviting a neighbor or acquaintance and attending with them!"
    • On Saturday, February 25 at 7pm at Zion Christian School the Unity PRC Young Peoples are sponsoring a speech by Dan Naulty titled “Jesus saves a soul seeking destruction”. Dan Naulty is a former MLB pitcher for the Minnesota Twins and the 1998 World Series winning NY Yankees. He will share his testimony of following after the fame of this world and being left empty. Then the Lord took hold of his life. He is now a reformed believer and pastor of Faith PCA. For more information, check out DanNaulty.com.

A new issue of Salt Shakers came out this week! See note below under Covenant ERC-Singapore

SISTER-CHURCH/MISSION NEWS:

  • Covenant ERC, Singapore and her Kolkata, India mission work:
    • Pastors J. Tan and M. Wee are faithfully serving the CERC. In her bulletin today, we find this wonderful note under the "Pastoral Note": "Today, we join the people of Israel by the banks of the Jordan River. Three days the people of Israel camped there, wondering how they will be able to cross this massive body of water and reach the promised land. Three days, God gave, for the truth to sink into their hearts and minds, that there is no way possible for them to cross over by themselves. For three days nothing happened until all the people saw the priests carrying the Ark step forward. All the attention of the people of Israel was now fixed on one singular point. The people of Israel did not know how they were going to cross over Jordan, but as they saw the priest carrying the Ark of the Covenant, they knew that was the answer and the way to reach Canaan. Now was the time for a glorious wonder of God to be performed before all the eyes of the world. Why, you ask? “That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever.” Joshua 4:24 Let us come together as one body into the presence of our God and worship Him this Lord’s Day."

This Week's Thought for Contemplation

"In the third place, we can only rightly understand and apply these marks [of the true church] when we understand that they are fundamentally antithetical. That is, we must consider them and apply them in the light of what are the marks of the false church. Of this Article 29 [Belgic Confession] speaks also:

As for the false church, she ascribes more power and authority to herself and her ordinances than to the Word of God, and will not submit herself to the yoke of Christ. Neither does she administer the sacraments as appointed by Christ in his Word, but adds to and takes from them as she thinks proper; she relieth more upon men than upon Christ; and persecutes those who live holily according to the Word of God and rebuke her for her errors, covetousness, and idolatry.

"In other words, the basic, either-or issue is: the Word of Christ or the word of man!

"The reason why these are the marks is connected with the very nature of the church. The church is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, of which Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone. There simply is no other foundation possible—not for the true church! If the church is to be built, it must be built on that foundation. And whoever proclaims anything else than the pure doctrine of the gospel is not building upon that foundation; he builds on another foundation, and he builds a mere human institution. It pleases Christ to call and to build His church through the preaching of the Word. Men may raise all kinds of objections against preaching and against sermons—as they do nowadays. They may devise various glamorous substitutes for the preaching of the pure doctrine of the gospel. The fact remains that it pleases Christ to gather His church through the preaching of the Word! You can never change that! Where the Word is preached, there is Christ; there is the voice of the good shepherd; there the sheep hear His voice; there they follow Him; there He gives them eternal life! Don't ever forget that! For remember: the church needs Christ! It is only in living connection with that Christ that the church is the church, and that the members possess the life of Christ. And the only contact which we have with Christ as long as we are in this present world is through His Word (not man's word), through His sacraments, and through His government and discipline. Where these are missing, Christ is missing. Where they are corrupted and to the extent that they are corrupted, there I am being separated from contact with Christ my head! This is the life-and-death seriousness of this entire question of the marks of the true church!"
