• YOU ARE INVITED! This Friday evening (Dec.31 - Old Year's Day)  and Saturday morning (Jan.1 - New Year's Day) the PR congregations will be holding special worship services to mark the end of the year of our Lord 2021 and the beginning of the new year of our Lord 2022. • Last Sunday Rev. J. Langerak (Heritage PRC) accepted the call to Covenant of Grace PRC (Spokane, WA). We rejoice with this congregation in God's goodness, and also pray that the Lord may give grace to Heritage as they prepare to say farewell to their pastor and his wife.
  
  
• Last Sunday Rev. C. Spronk declined the calls from Hudsonville and Doon PRCs. We continue to pray for the needs of these vacant congregations, even as we are confident of their Shepherd's perfect care for them during their time of vacancy.
  
  
• Rev. D. Holstege and family are tentatively planning to move to Wingham this week and it appears his installation as Wingham's pastor will take place now on Sunday, Jan.9. We pray that the Lord may fulfill these plans for all involved.
  
  
• This is the time of year when the newly elected elders and deacons are installed into office in the PR churches. May we remember to thank the retiring men who have served and to pray for those entering office, some for the first time. May Jesus Christ, the only King of the church and the chief Shepherd of His sheep, use these officebearers for the proper care and guidance of His people. And we also remind our officebearers of the special resource section for them on this website.

  • This past week the church visitors from the PRC Contact Committee met with the Session of the CERC and fellowshipped with the saints. The delegation of Prof. Dykstra and D.Kregel and their wives will leave early Tuesday morning. Prof. Dykstra led both services today.
  • From today's bulletin (special end-of-year message): As we conclude this festive season and this year of 2021, we conclude with the verse 15-17 of Psalm 90 “Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” This is our comfort, this is our peace. That our Lord Jesus Christ is ever faithful to his precious bride. Even though she sins greatly against God, even though she not just once or twice but constantly plays the harlot and is called a whore, God ever preserves her. God preserve her does so by supernaturally working in her repentance.
  • Mission news from Kolkata (India): Today an adult baptism and an infant baptism took place. We praise God for this evidence of His covenant mercy!

This Week's Thought for Contemplation

“'Peace on earth': this is the song of heaven’s army. Peace is something that exists in heaven, for there is peace in the being of God, peace between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and there is peace among the angels. Peace is harmony, wellness, or wholeness. To be at peace means to be in a harmonious relationship with God. The angels enjoy peace with God, for they have never sinned.

Man enjoyed peace with God before the fall, but he forfeited it by his sins. Now because of man’s sin, God is at war with man, and man is at war with God. Man hates God and fights against him, and peace is lost. As long as man is a sinner, peace with God is impossible. Peace must remain in heaven, but it cannot come to earth. That explains the history of this world, a history of man’s inhumanity to man and a history of war, violence, bloodshed, and murder. That explains God’s dealings with mankind, a history of terrible judgments because man has rebelled against his Creator.

But God made a promise to his people that he would send peace to men. That peace is brought about because of the coming of Jesus the savior. God creates peace between heaven and earth by coming to earth. The incarnation of the Son of God is the greatest announcement of peace that has ever been heard. In that great act, God says, “I am at peace with you. I am sending my Son to be the Prince of Peace.”

Moreover, that coming is not only an announcement, but it also actually accomplishes peace. It accomplishes peace by uniting in one person the divine and the human. Jesus is the second person of the holy Trinity; therefore, he is fully God. The man Jesus is the true son of the virgin Mary, of her flesh and of her blood; therefore, he is fully man. The incarnation brings these two together, the divine and the human. Therefore, Jesus comes as close to us as it is possible for him to come. He becomes one of us, our Immanuel, God with us. That is crucial to establish peace, for the divine Savior suffers for our sins in the human nature.

God will not simply forgive sin, for his justice must be satisfied. But we cannot satisfy God’s justice. One who is truly God and truly man does that. Since we can find no such person, God sends his own Son. That is the only way of peace, and all who reject this peace perish as God’s enemies. But all who by faith embrace this peace live forever as God’s friends.

What a wonder of grace: the Savior is born, to the glory of God, according to God’s good pleasure, and as proof of God’s goodwill, to bring us peace."

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. ...For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. ~ Isaiah 9:2,6,7

• Watch for and attend these upcoming Christmas programs/singspirations in the PRC congregations:
  • The Edgerton (MN) PRC Young People will host their annual Christmas Singspiration tonight at First Reformed Church in Edgerton (Minnesota). A collection will be received to offset the cost of attending the Young People's Convention.
  • Heritage PRC (Sioux Falls, SD) will hold their congregational Christmas program tonight after the evening service.
  • Grandville PRC will hold a short Christmas Hymn Sing tonight after the evening worship service. The Sunday School will be singing 2 songs as a special number.
  • The Peace PRC Choir (Dyer, IN) will be hosting a Christmas Singspiration tonight after the evening worship service. "Please join us as we glorify God in singing praises to Him."

PRC DENOMINATIONAL NEWS:

From the PRC Contact Committee: This past Wednesday [Dec.15], a delegation from the Contact Committee traveled to Singapore, D.V. This is a normal annual visit, visits which have lately been curtailed due to Covid. The purposes of the visit are to conduct church visitation with the Session of CERC, to relieve Pastor Tan of pulpit duties for a couple of weeks, and to further strengthen our relationship with the CERC. Please pray for Prof. Dykstra and David Kregel and their wives as they conduct this work on behalf of the churches, and continue to pray for all those in other lands whom we have come to know and love.

• This past week the seminary completed its first semester as exams were held. We thank the Lord for being able to experience a normal term of in-person classes once again. It is the prayer of the faculty, staff, and students that you may enjoy the peace and joy of God's Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ, in this holiday season. "Glory to God in the highest"!
• Seminary will break from Dec.19-Jan.2, the weeks of Christmas and New Years Day. The seminary library and bookstore will remain open daily (M-F, 8-5) for any of your book and supply needs. A reminder that the bookstore is a good place to find gifts for the Christmas season! The staff is available to assist with any other needs you may have as well. Some may wonder, why would session want others to be asking heart-probing questions to them? We desire this because we desire to be held accountable that we are doing the utmost of our ability in being faithful to our calling as office bearers. Please pray for them and for us in the meeting for the next two weeks. We thank God also for the CK camp that was just held in the week past. What a time to fellowship and enjoy the communion of the saints. May God bless all that we have learned in the camp and hide God’s word in our hearts.

This Week's Thought for Contemplation

"How wondrous are the ways of God!

Thus, indeed, one exclaims ever again, as often as he may read the utterly simple, yet amazing marvelous story of the coming of Immanuel!

Wonderful it is that narrative from its very beginning.

Or is it not amazing that the story that tells of the incarnation of the Son of God, of the birth of Christ, the Anointed of God, should be introduced by the name of Caesar Augustus, the head of the mighty world power? A decree went forth from Caesar Augustus!

It testifies, indeed, that the glory had departed from Israel. How otherwise could a decree of the mighty Caesar have any bearing upon the realization of so distinctly an Israelitish hope as the birth of their Messiah? Yet, so it was. After captivity in Babylon, there had, indeed, been a brief period of hope and joy. The temple was rebuilt. Jerusalem had been raised from its ruins. The law had been restored. But never had Israel been restored to its former glory and freedom. A mere handful of people had returned to the land of their fathers. Though the temple had been rebuilt, the Holy of Holies remained empty: the art of the covenant was lost forever! Israel had been the plaything of cruel nations that plowed upon its back and left long and deep furrows. A hated tyrant, descendant and worthy representative of the Reprobate, occupied the throne in Jerusalem; and even so, the scepter in his hand was controlled by a mightier hand than his: that of the glorious Caesar of Rome! And a decree went forth from Caesar Augustus….

The outward form of the kingdom of God had been swallowed up by the mighty world power!

Even so, the fullness of time had come!

True, it did not appear so to those that had expectations of an earthly Messiah and world glory. But God’s purpose was different. The earthly form of the kingdom was a mere shadow. It might disappear. And it must needs depart, that the essence of that Kingdom might become manifest. God’s King will, indeed, also cause the kingdoms of the world power to crumble into the dust, but He would not appear in a halo of glory, with world crowns on His head, royal purple about His shoulders, and glittering sword in His hand, but as the lowly Servant of Jehovah, the Man after Go’s heart, Who will establish His kingdom in righteousness!

Hence, not in Jerusalem, but in Bethlehem, are His proper connections.

There He must be born!

And the world power must cooperate to this end: a decree went forth from Caesar Augustus!

From the PRC Contact Committee: This week Wednesday ]Dec.15], a delegation from the Contact Committee will travel to Singapore, D.V. This is a normal annual visit, visits which have lately been curtailed due to Covid. The purposes of the visit are to conduct Church Visitation with the Session of CERC, to relieve Pastor Tan of pulpit duties for a couple of weeks, and to further strengthen our relationship with the CERC. Please pray for Prof. Dykstra and David Kregel and their wives as they travel in the next week, and continue to pray for all those in other lands who we have come to know and love.

PRC Seminary Notices:

• This past week the seminary completed its fifteenth and final week of regular classes, and now enter the week of exams. Remember to pray for faculty, students, and staff as they finish the first semester this week.
• Seminary will break from Dec.19-Jan.2, the weeks of Christmas and New Years Day. The 2022 Interim course will run from Jan.3-Jan.12. Prof. R. Dykstra will be teaching The History and Principles of Christian Education. Watch for a notice soon about auditors!
  
• The seminary's special conference on preaching was held on Oct.28-29 at Trinity PRC. If you were unable to attend and would like to listen to the speeches, they are available here and here. The videos have also now been posted to the seminary YouTube channel.

Htay Nine is giving a word of edification over video to the congregation as they are not currently able to gather for worship. These messages are supervised by the elders and Rev. Titus reviews them prior to being delivered. [in her bulletin today] Let us remember to bring to the Lord the needs of this pastor and these saints in their difficulties.

Yes, there are differences of culture and experiences, but nothing can hinder the unity and bonds of love that we have in Christ Jesus. We are called to especially pray for them.

This Week's Thought for Contemplation

"But there in that manger we see the revelation of God’s glory! The world did not see it then, nor do the wicked see it yet today. That is why the story is embellished with quaint little manger scenes. There are shepherds around a tiny manger with an image of Christ in it. There are three Magi (as if anyone knows if there were 3), there are peaceful looking sheep, and, oh yes, let us not forget a little drummer boy. But then, why bother with a manger scene? St. Nicholas, or Santa Claus, with Rudolph and the other reindeer—these really do a better job in revealing what Christmas is all about. The unbelieving world does not see God’s glory revealed in that manger. The lowly birth of our Savior does not make the season bright! But we see the glory of God revealed to us there! There is no doubt that we see and full well understand the shame that surrounded the birth of our Savior. Not only was He born in a cattle stall but, what is more, the glory that was Christ’s as the Son of God was veiled over in human flesh. Christ looked like any other baby boy as He lay there in that manger. Who could see in His face the very Son of God—divine? But we look upon that Christ child with the eyes of faith! And we see Him for who He really is! He is God with us—our Immanuel!

"God has manifested Himself in our flesh. The Son of God came down from His glory on high and visited us poor sinners. And He did this in order that He might deliver us from our sin! We were lost people of God! We were lost and condemned in our sin. The only thing we deserved from God is condemnation and death. God’s curse lay upon us. But God in His great mercy and grace sent forth His Son in order to redeem you and me from sin and death. God in His great love for us sent His Son in order to satisfy His justice and make us righteous before Him.

"But do you see what all of this is, people of God? All these are the attributes of God, which together make up His glory! All these virtues, all these perfections of God, are evident in the birth of Jesus! And it is for that reason that the birth of Christ is in fact the very revelation of God’s glory! In Him all the virtues of God are revealed to us! And for that reason we praise God today. Glory to God in the Highest! Now we can understand why the angels were singing the praises of God there in the hills of Bethlehem."

• India missions update from Georgetown PRC (in her bulletin today): The Tamil translations of Heidelberg Catechism and Church Order have been finalized and approved by Pas. Paulraj. While the Church Order is ready-to-print, some page-layout needs yet to be done. Proof reading and editing of the Tamil translation of Canons of Dordt is under way. A harmonizing of the 3 Forms of Unity is also being done so that the whole 3FU will have the same flow of language and terminology. The translation into Tamil of the 2nd chapter of Rev, Bruinsma’s studies in Doctrine is underway. Pray for this work of translation. Pray for our beloved brothers and sisters in India in the PRCV and English church.

This Week's Thought for Contemplation

Christmas in His Fear

When we celebrate Christmas In His Fear then we go to Him and praise Him for the gift of all gifts that He has given us. We go to Him in prayer. We go to Him in His house of worship. We acknowledge this great and glorious gift and do not hide it from ourselves and from our children by a host of worldly, material gifts that we give and receive from men. When we celebrate Christmas In His Fear, Christ and the loves of God in sending Him to be our Savior occupies the central part of our celebration; and the greater part of our activity on that day revolves about Him. When we celebrate Christmas in His fear we gather in all humility and joy before His feet to be taught by Him anew and more richly the glorious truths of the birth of His Son. 

And he who truly celebrates Christmas in His fear will not be able to hold back his songs of praise to God. With the holy angels he shall sing: Glory to God in the highest. He will sing of the true peace that God has wrought in this Son for those who are the men of His good pleasure and will glorify Him for it. And as the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God and telling all whom they met what they had seen and heard, the covenant parent will also want to have the day filled with such praise and glory to God by his children and will take them along to God's house of worship that they too may hear of all this wonder of God's grace. 

Christmas celebration In His Fear is celebration before His face. It is celebration in the consciousness that He accomplished all these things that the Church of Christ might live before His face in everlasting glory. And it is celebration that responds to that glorious truth.

PRC Seminary Notices:

• This past week the seminary completed its thirteenth week of the first semester, with two weeks left before exams. Remember to pray for faculty, students, and staff as they move toward the end of the semester. You will find the semester schedule and calendar posted on the seminary's website.
• The seminary's special conference on preaching was held on Oct.28-29 at Trinity PRC. If you were unable to attend and would like to listen to the speeches, they are available here and here. The videos have also now been posted to the seminary YouTube channel.
  
• The Fall 2021 issue of the PRT Journal is being put together. If you missed the Spring issue, it is currently available in its digital forms on the seminary's website as well as in print. Let us pray boldly, knowing our Sovereign God has sovereignly saved us totally depraved sinners. There is no stopping of God’s irresistible grace. Refuge in the Storms
"For the first time, the covenant name of God occurs in the psalm. “God” in the translation of the Authorized Version is in the Hebrew original the name Jehovah. This name of covenant faithfulness, fulfilled in the New Testament in the name Jesus, is added to the name of sovereign power, Adonai, that is, Lord. With regard to all the troubles of earthly life, the psalmist puts his trust in the God of the covenant. In his covenant with the psalmist as a member of Israel, God has promised to be good to the psalmist, not only regarding spiritual life and a future heaven, but also regarding earthly life with all its circumstances here and now. This God can be relied on. He is faithful. In addition, he is mighty to accomplish his promise. He governs health and sickness, prosperity and adversity, success and failure, physical life and physical death. He is Lord of earth, as of heaven.

"The word translated “trust” refers to making the Lord Jehovah one’s refuge. In all the storms of earthly life—the sorrows and disappointments, the loss and shame, the poverty and bereavement, the scorn and persecution—the psalmist makes God his refuge. There will be storms. If there are no storms in the life of the child of God, there is no need of a refuge. If these storms are not violent, there is no need of God as a refuge. To the very last verse, Psalm 73 utterly demolishes the notion that divine love and blessing mean earthly prosperity, ease, and success, whether for the true church (Israel) or for the individual child of God (the psalmist). The psalmist makes God his refuge by believing the covenant promise, “I will be your God, and I will do you good.” With God as his refuge, the psalmist weathers the storms. He bears the troubles patiently. With God as his refuge, the psalmist lets the storms do their profitable work upon him. The troubles work his glory. With God as his refuge, the psalmist will not again stumble and nearly fall, regardless of the severity of the storm in his own life and regardless of the seeming tranquility of the ungodly. God is the “rock of my heart” (v. 26).

This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it (Ps.118:24). On this new Lord's Day we bring our sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving unto our sovereign Creator and Redeemer, who is worthy of all honor and glory.

Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men! Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city. ~ Psalm 31:19-21

• This Thursday, November 25, the PRC congregations in the U.S. will celebrate Thanksgiving Day with a special morning worship service (usually at 9:30 a.m., but check the website of the church near you). • Last Sunday Rev. C. Spronk (Faith PRC) declined the call to Covenant of Grace PRC (Spokane, WA). COG has a new trio of Revs. J.Holstege (Zion PRC), J. Langerak (Heritage PRC), and D.Noorman (Southwest PRC); the congregation will vote next Sunday evening, Nov.28.
  
  
• The Council of Hudsonville PRC has formed a new trio of Rev. R. Barnhill (Peace PRC), Rev. D. Noorman (Southwest PRC), and Rev. C. Spronk (Faith PRC). The congregational meeting is scheduled for tonight after the service. *UPDATE: Rev. C. Spronk has received this call.
  
  
• The Council of Doon PRC has formed a new trio of Rev. M. Kortus (Hope PRC-Redlands, CA), Rev. C. Spronk (Faith PRC), and Rev. N. Decker (Grandville PRC). The congregational meeting is planned for Nov.29.

• Did you know that...
  • Lynden PRC had members who were affected by the recent floods in the NW part of her state (Washington)? This note is found in her bulletin today: Several church families were affected by the Nooksack River flooding this past week. We give thanks to our Father for His sovereign care so that no serious injury was incurred among members of our congregation. We lift up in prayer the needs of family and friends who did lose personal possessions, vehicles, and even homes to the flooding. "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge" Psalm 46:10-1
  • The PRC Seminary had a special CPR class this past Friday after our "Friday bratfest" lunch? An AED was recently purchased for the building and Mitch Van Overloop and Ted Van Solkema gave a special demonstration in how to use the medical device, as well as instruction in other basic CPR procedures. It was profitable time for all of them!

The family of our Lord Jesus Christ goes beyond our shores even to the other side of the globe. Positively, CERC Church order Article mandates that we seek experienced and competent ministers or elders to visit our church and to hold us accountable to our faithfulness to God’s word. ...By the gracious providence of God, our government has recently relaxed travel restrictions. And it seems very likely that we still can receive church visitations from the U.S. at the end of this year.

We thank the Lord for His traveling mercies provided for them. They will go back to the USA on Dec. 1, D.V. Rev. Holstege is scheduled to preach for us next Sunday (Nov. 28) in our first worship service. This would be his farewell sermon to us, the Lord willing. And this: In accordance with Art. 44 of the Church Order, and the appointment of Revs. Kleyn and Smit by the Classis of PRCP as Church visitors for this year is scheduled to meet with the Council on Saturday (Nov. 27, 2021) at 9AM, D.V.

This Week's Thought for Contemplation

"...It is God’s purpose to bring glory to His name by means of the salvation of a church, elect in Jesus Christ.  For that reason the church has always existed and has always been in the process of building.  But often times in the process of this building of the church, it dwindled in numbers.  This was evident already at the time of the Flood.  The true church of Christ that existed in the world at that time was only eight souls.  That is all—only eight people!  When Elijah was prophet in Israel God had preserved unto Himself out of the hundreds of thousands in Israel only 7,000 who were faithful to Him.  When these few captives returned from Babylon, the church consisted of only 50,000 people—so very few, especially compared to the millions of people in the world who lived in unbelief.  But God always has His church.  He preserves and gathers and builds that church throughout the ages.

And He does that today too.  We have much to be thankful for—much to praise God for as the members of the church today.  You know, friends, it is so easy for us to become discouraged in this way.  The true church always seems so small.  It is easy for us to take the attitude of Elijah—“I and I only am left who is faithful to the cause of Christ.”  Christ asks the question too:  Will there be faith left in the earth when I return?

Pagan religions have millions of members.  The cults today have millions of members.  The Christian false church today is also mammoth in size.  The true church of Christ has always been small!  This can be discouraging to those who seek to remain faithful to the cause of Jesus Christ in this world.  At one time the church strove to be true and distinctive in its doctrine and holy in the life of her members.  We do not see much of that anymore today.  It can be so discouraging!  But we must be reminded today of God’s enduring faithfulness to His church.  He has always and will always preserve, and build, His church.  In this time of the year that we give God thanks for our provision let us remember to give Him thanks for that too.  Jerusalem is being built!  Small?  Oh yes!  But the church is being built.  We as believers have been given a place to worship.  We have grown spiritually again this past year.  And when God calls in the harvest at the end of time we will be numbered together with a throng so large it cannot be numbered!

But the main reason we praise God today is because of this truth:  Jehovah doth build up Jerusalem!  The Lord God builds up His church!  We are not held in the hands of man.  We are not built up by men.  It is God who gives the increase—always!  If we were to look only upon the feeble efforts of man to build the church, we would be doomed to disappointment.  We would not be able to praise God much today.  Men falter and fail.  Even the strongest man is at his best weak and frail.  God uses men, no doubt, but God does not depend on man to build up His church.  If He did, as we said, His cause would fail!  It would fail because of our enemies who are far too strong for us to resist!  Just as they were when the captives returned from captivity."
