A Call to Bless the Lord

There is no question about it that we desire to obtain blessings. Even the unbelievers want a blessing, although what they call a blessing is not what God calls blessings, which come only through Christ our Savior.

But a question also arises, namely, What does the psalmist mean when in Psalm 104:1 he wrote, "Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honor and majesty"? Can God be blessed? Can we bless God Who is so great and so far above all creatures? As the psalmist states it, God is great and clothed with honor and majesty. We seek blessings from Him; and we need them badly. But is there something which God does not have, and which makes it necessary that we pray for Him to have it?

Well, to bless God is to praise Him. To bless Him is to say that He is God and worthy of praise. We cannot add to His glory. We cannot to any degree add something to Him, or help Him in anything. We can and must say how great He is. And that is exactly what the psalmist is doing here. After saying, "Bless the Lord," he does bless Him by calling Him great, because He is clothed with honor and majesty.

Note the fact that the psalmist says this to his own soul. He tells his soul to bless God. And that means that with our souls we praise him for who and what He is. We cannot help Him become great; but with our souls and with our mouths we can present Him to men more greatly than they have seen Him in the past.

Tell Him then that you believe that He is God alone, and that He is your God, Whom you love. Praise Him as the infinitely great God with unspeakably great honor and majesty.

Bless God for blessing you. Never boast of what you did. Thank Him for making it possible for you to do this good work. Bless Him for giving you faith and hope and love.

Quote for Reflection:

“I often say that there is no power or means to resist the sects except this one article of Christian righteousness.   If we have lost it, we cannot resist any errors or sects.”    ~ Martin Luther
