Looking Diligently

If you look to the east you will fail to see what is behind you to the west. More serious is the fact that is found in Hebrews 12:15 . There we read, "Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many are defiled."

This is applied to the truth which we considered yesterday, namely, that we must follow peace with all men, thus walking on a straight path in running the race mentioned in verse 1 of this 12th chapter. For without such a walk we will not see God. What an awesome truth!

Not looking diligently in order to know where to run in this race, will cause us to fail to enjoy God's grace. Looking in the wrong direction will cause us to fail to see what is in the right direction. And, remember, the author of this epistle says here that we must look diligently. For if we do not, we will fail to enjoy God's grace -- even as merely looking at delicious food on the table will not give us the pleasure of its taste, or the benefit of its nourishment. Thus here the blessed enjoyment of the prize in this race will not and cannot be ours. If His grace is upon us, He will chastise us to turn us back to the way; but we will not enjoy His grace until we return.

Without peace and holiness we shall not see God in His grace. To see him we need to look diligently. That word "diligently" means inspecting, in other words, being very careful, as to where we walk. Even as one the highway we need to read the signs, so we must look diligently, carefully, and constantly to know where to run to the prize God has realized for us through his Son and His cross.

Did you read God's Word today? Are you eager to know where to walk and to reach that prize at the end of that way? Or, like Esau, are you more interested in the things of this world?
