CLASSIS WEST is scheduled to meet this Wednesday, October 9 hosted by Loveland (CO) PR Church. The main item on the agenda is the classical examination of Randolph PRC's pastor-elect, Erik Guichelaar. For this purpose a special worship service is planned for Tuesday evening, the 8th, at 7 PM (MT). Synod is to be represented at this meeting by three ministers (delegates ad examina) from the East: Revs. C. Haak, K. Koole and R.VanOverloop.
Let us remember in prayer the delegates as they travel and carry out the work of the churches in the West and for pastor-elect E.Guichelaar as he is examined. May the Lord be pleased to bless all the labors conducted and the decisions reached.
Classis East is meeting today for its regular session in the Grand Rapids area at Byron Center PRC. The agenda is light. Rev.James Slopsema, pastor of First PRC, Grand Rapids, will lead the meeting according to the scheduled rotation. May the Lord bless this church work of our pastors and elders and the decisions reached for the good of the churches.
The stated clerk's public report is also now available (see below). It is also attached as a pdf.
Report of Classis East
September 11, 2013
Byron Center PRC
Classis East met in regular session on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at the Byron Center PRC. Each church was represented by two delegates. Rev. J. Slopsema was the chairman for this session.
The business was routine and classis was finished early. As the chairman noted, this is a sign that the churches have peace and unity in their midst.
Classical appointments were given to Faith PRC. There were no expenses for this session.
Classis will meet next on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Southeast PRC.
Respectfully submitted,
Jon J. Huisken
Stated Clerk
The Classical Committee of Classis, with the previous approval of Classis West, has rescheduled the regular meeting of Classis West from September 4 to October 9 in order to avoid having two Classis meetings this Fall. This will allow time for CandidateErik Guichelaar to consider and answer his calls and then prepare to be examined by Classis West, Lord willing.
Friday, June 14, 2013: The last day of synod was another day of giving thanks to God for His great goodness. The morning devotions began with Psalm 145, a Psalm of praise to God. Every session of synod begins with prayer. The many heartfelt prayers of the delegates focused on giving thanks to God for His undeserved goodness.
When synod made decisions regarding the work in the Philippines, Rev. Smit, one of our missionaries in the Philippines, addressed synod. He expressed the gratitude of the missionaries to the churches for their interest in and support of Christ’s work in the Philippines. Rev. Smit also brought the greetings of the churches with whom they work in the Philippines by reading a letter of greeting from the combined consistories of the Berean PRC and the First Reformed Church of Bulacan. Rev. Van Overloop expressed words of thanks for the dedicated labors of Rev. Smit, Rev. Kleyn, and their families, on behalf of our churches.
Thursday, June 13, 2013: Today was a day of continued gratitude to God. Mr. Erik Guichelaar successfully sustained his examination before synod. He was examined in Church History, Church Polity, OT History, NT History, and Practica. With thanks to God, synod approved his examination and declared Mr. Guichelaar a candidate of the ministry of the Word and Sacraments eligible for call on or after July 13, 2013. As churches we have many reasons to give thanks – for the truth of God’s Word, the gifts God has given to this young man who confessed the truth so beautifully, and a seminary which faithfully teaches these truths so the church receives the truth each Sunday.
