March 28 – LD 13, Day 3: Redeemed by Blood

I Peter 1:18,19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

As the Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ is our Lord.  He purchased us to be His own.  We by nature forsook God and found ourselves in captivity to sin.  We were slaved and put on the auction block.  Christ entered the auction barn and took up the bid to buy us.  The language that the catechism uses here, as well as in other places, is warm and tender and speaks of the great distress and death from which we were delivered.   His was the winning bid because the value of it far outweighed the value that anyone else could provide.  Gold and silver fluctuate in value.  What He might have paid for us in money thousands of years ago, would no longer be worthy.  But, Jesus Christ laid down his own life.  He paid the price of the bid with His own blood. 

The result is that we are His servants and He is our loving Lord.  We serve Him in love.  We belong to Him.  He has a right to do with us as He pleases.  And, we know that whatever He does to us is done out of love and for our salvation.  He sends trials, afflicts us with cancer and other sicknesses, and brings death into our homes.  He does this as our Loving Lord to whom we submit in humility praying for the grace, never to forget the wonder of our spiritual adoption and the thankfulness we owe to Him.
